## What to look for

- **Blackout, not room darkening.** Room-darkening fabric dims a room; blackout fabric is meant to stop light coming through it. A “100% blackout” claim is about the fabric, not the gaps around it.
- **The edges leak.** An inside-mount blind leaves a gap at each side. An outside mount that overlaps the frame, side channels, or a blackout curtain over the blind closes more of it.
- **Measure first.** Stock sizes are cheaper than made-to-measure, but a blind narrower than the window lets a stripe of daylight in on each side.
- **Cordless is the rule in Canada.** Since May 1, 2021, the [Corded Window Coverings Regulations](https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2019-97/FullText.html) limit any reachable cord on blinds and curtains sold in Canada to 22 cm, and a cord loop to a 44 cm perimeter, because longer cords can strangle a child. If a listing ships from outside Canada, check it says cordless or meets those limits.

## Questions

### Are blackout blinds or blackout curtains better for day sleep?

They do different jobs. A blind sits close to the glass; a curtain can overlap the frame and cover the gaps around the blind. Many day sleepers use both: a blackout blind for the glass and a curtain over it for the edges.

### Do 100% blackout blinds make a room completely dark?

The fabric may block all light, but light still gets in around the edges unless the blind overlaps the frame or runs in side channels. Check the edges at noon before you decide it isn’t dark enough.
