What mmHg means

Compression is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg), the unit used for blood pressure. Graduated socks are tightest at the ankle and looser at the top. This is how Sigvaris, a compression maker, describes its levels:

  • 8–15 mmHg: mild leg aching or tiredness, and general support for long periods of sitting or standing.
  • 15–20 mmHg: heavy or mildly swollen legs. Over-the-counter socks usually come at about this level.
  • 20–30 mmHg: the most commonly prescribed level.
  • 30–40 mmHg and up: for medical conditions, prescribed and overseen by a doctor.
  • Measure, don’t guess. Brands size by ankle and calf circumference (some by leg length too), not shoe size.
  • Prescription socks and benefits. Pharmacies generally won’t dispense the higher levels without a prescription, and some workplace benefit plans cover prescribed compression stockings. Check your plan before you buy.

This page is product and price information, not medical advice. Ask a doctor, nurse or pharmacist which compression level is right for you, especially before wearing 20–30 mmHg or firmer, or if you have a condition affecting your legs, skin or circulation.

Questions

What mmHg compression socks are best for nurses?

There’s no single answer, and it’s worth asking a health professional. Sigvaris describes 8–15 mmHg for tiredness and support during long periods of standing, and 15–20 mmHg (the usual over-the-counter level) for heavy or mildly swollen legs; 20–30 mmHg and up are usually prescribed.

Do I need a prescription for compression socks in Canada?

Not for the usual over-the-counter levels (around 15–20 mmHg). Higher levels are prescribed, and benefit plans that cover compression stockings generally ask for a prescription; check your plan.
