Earplugs for sleeping: prices in Canada

Daytime is loud: traffic, deliveries, the neighbours’ day. NIOSH’s advice for shift workers is to block noise with earplugs or a white noise machine. Here are the earplugs Price Tracker Canada checks at Canadian stores, with the price now and the 30-day low.

How to read the NRR

  • NRR is the Noise Reduction Rating, in decibels. The U.S. EPA has required it on hearing protectors since 1979 (Canadian Audiologist), so most earplugs sold in Canada carry one. Higher means more blocking; the best-rated foam earplugs are labelled NRR 32 or 33.
  • Expect less than the label. NIOSH suggests subtracting 50% from the labelled NRR for foam (formable) earplugs and 70% for other earplugs, because people rarely get the lab fit (Canadian Audiologist). Rolling foam plugs thin and holding them while they expand helps.
  • Foam, putty or reusable. Foam blocks the most and is cheap to replace. Silicone or wax putty covers the ear canal opening instead of going in, and sits flatter for side sleepers. Reusable flanged plugs wash but usually have a lower NRR.
  • Check you can still hear your alarms (smoke alarm, phone) with them in, especially if you sleep alone.

Questions

What NRR do I need for sleeping?

There’s no sleep standard. NRR is a hearing-protection rating: higher blocks more, and real-world protection is lower than the label. For a noisy daytime street, many people start with foam plugs rated NRR 32 or 33 and move to putty or reusable plugs if foam is uncomfortable.

Are foam or silicone earplugs better for side sleepers?

Silicone or wax putty sits over the ear canal opening rather than inside it, so it presses less against the pillow; foam usually blocks more. Try a mixed pack before buying a big box.
